View Full Version : Looking at an 05

Okay guys, I have been looking to get a used high end this season. I have pretty much been set on a used DM5 or 6. That was until we got us a brand new PEOG. :D I really dont know crap about high ends. And that is one reason I am thinking about going with the Ego. Plus we have a team I play against that is sponsored by Planet Eclipse (Capitol Offense) so I know how good these markers are.

Now I will most likely be getting a DM some time this year, but an 05 Ego has come up for sale on a local forum. Its stock other then a Shocktech reg. Nearly perfect looks. And it still has the owners manual. The seller said it does has a very small air leak. Which at my home field even thou it is a milsim field, the gun techs are high end users, so that shouldnt be an issue to get corrected.

They are wanting around $250 (no shipping, local pick up luckily).

Now the questions. One, does this sound to be a resonable deal? I dont know prices on used high ends. I am still trying to educate myself on high ends for the most part. And to be honest I cant tell most of them apart from one another except the DM's as that is what I have been able to use. My main adviser on paintball stuff has gotten out of the game for the most part, and I was too broke to buy his DM3, DM4 and ProMaster he was would have hooked me up with for $300... Sucks to get good deals when your broke, but seems to be the way of things, doesnt it?

Two, what are some things I need to look for when looking for a used high end?

Three, loader? I have a Revvy. Will that suffice until I can get a better loader? We've always got people selling them local so getting a higher end loader wont be an issue when I get the spare money.

Okay, thanks for any info and comments.

$250 is reasonable for an '05 in the condition you're describing. The only issue is where precisely the leak is coming from. It could be as simple as a hose, or it could get ugly and be a QEV or 'noid. QEV's and 'noids are expensive to replace, and you'd want a certified tech to do the work.

The main issues with high ends are looks and functionality. If it looks like it's had the hell beat out of it, it probably has. If it's leaking somewhere, that's a danger signal too. Egos in general are easy to live with and require minimal maintenance, which is great, but it also means there are a LOT of them out there that have had NO maintenance done to them. When I buy a used gun, I don't even look at it myself until I've had a certified tech (Darth Sideshow in the case of an Ego) look it over and pronounce it worthy. For a DM I'd suggest Rocky Cagnoni of Mutiny Paintball, unless you're certified yourself.

For a loader, I'd recommend a DYE Rotor, but I know they're expensive as hell. In the meantime, for less money I'd go with a VLocity or a Empire Reloader B. Torques are killer too, but they run all the time, so that's a downer in the woods.

Hope this helps, Jester...and welcome to PEOG!

Yeah it does. The Qev may get changed out any way so that isnt a big deal. A quick search and you my friend are right. Solenoids aint cheap.

Well, I will have to see what price I can get him down too. He said $270 shipped and Paypal'ed but significantly cheaper for pick up. He's in the next county over, so it isnt too far for a meet. So depending on his deffinetion of significantly, I may take the chance. Hey, its only money right? I waist alot more on alot less. We'll just have to see what price he makes me...

EDIT:
Just checked my PM's on the local forum. $235. Man, I am gonna have to ponder this for a couple days.

See if you can find out what the leak is...that'll have a major bearing on how you proceed...

10-4 on that. I just went through the manual Sideshow had posted in the tech section. I went through the problems sections throughly. Hopefully I can tell a bit more about the issue from where he tells me it is leaking air.

There are a few tips I can give for finding out.

1) gas it up assembled, minus the board side of grips being uncovered, and listen in the general area...if air comes out the feedneck or the barrel its likely to be valve

2) if you hear it above the board, then its in the areas of the noid, QEV and the hoses.

3) if its around the regs both inline and LPR, then we'll start there

4) if its around the noid, disconnect the wires from the board, both the double wire noid group and the 4 wire group for the eyes, then remove the grip screws, with a partner, remove the grip frame and then with the macro line and bottle attached, gass it up SLOWLY to hear where the leak is coming from. that will help figuring the general area to determin noid QEV, or any one of the 3 hoses.

Jester, I bought an 05 recently (actually used it out @ the VP game this past weekend) and I love it.

Mine was in decent condition with some worn areas on the gun simply from use. I paid around $200 shipped for mine, but the guy was looking to move it. I'm sure if you do go with it..then once you get it up and running, you'll like it.

a 250 investment in an 05, and even IF you have to drop 150 to make her PRESTINE operational, its well worth it

Okay got another PM from him. He has actually done a couple games with it. He said he doubts its the noid or Qev the way its shooting. He said he is still thinking about sending it off and keeping it as a back up. Which may be a ploy to move it quicker. No one has had any complants on his other sales. And to be honest, I should have bought that darn Crossfire tank he sold two weeks ago. New Hydro and he only wanted $80...

I'll give it a couple days then go back to him.

I figure the first High End I get is gonna end up screwed up. I dont believe in having a gun I cant fully work on. So the first one will get ripped apart. If the force is with me, the marker may shoot again. If not, "parts gun". Now I will let my local techs go over it with me the first time.

Look around pbnation too if you're looking for cheap high ends. Many people who play speedball regularly flip markers every season for really good prices. I've seen fully functional 05s going for around $250 with hoppers or tanks.

The only thing with the Nation is I have to find a broker to go through. But I know there are some deals to be had on there.

Jester, I got mine off of the Nation. I searched for a couple of weeks and posted 'feelers' in a bunch of different threads until I got the response I wanted. I wasn't looking to spend too much money (just because I wanted to ensure I would like the different style of playing it requires). I eventually found the gun now in my possession at a really good price.

Havok, I'll keep a check on there. That one isnt too bad. I got a stupid question, what barrel threads do Eclipse use...?

Vash, do you do much business on the Nation? You know I wish you lived about an hour closer.

Egos use Autococker threads.
