View Full Version : thinking about getting a geo, what to expect?

Im selling my sl74 on the nation in order to pick up a geo... from reading reviews, it seems like i should expect it to perform somewhere between a dm and an ego.
I guess my question is where in between? When i first started getting high ends, o jumped from a spyder to an icd freestyle. That gun was whisper quiet, but finnicky. After that, i only shot dm's and pm's for a couple years. Had a dm and pm 5, a dm and pm 6, and inbetween the 5's and 6's, i tried an ego5. I hated the way it shot... it was loud, and the recoil was alot compared to a matrix. Then i got an ego7. The gun i got isn't quiet, but it shoots pretty smooth, and feels good in my hands. I loved it so much, i got rid of my matrixes and bought an sl74. But my sl shoots identical to my ego7 and doesn"t look as good, so i want to try something different, but not too different. Geos seem to be very popular, more popular than egos... i want to give one a try, but i kinda want to know what to expect.
Efficiency wise, are they as good as egos? Or at least better than matrixes?
i understand they are not quiet, but do they kick less than egos?
Basically, are they like a mix of matrix and ego, or are they something else entirely? Basically, what are the negatives of the geo against an ego, and against a matrix? And what does it do better than each? Guess you could say id like to see a three way comparison test...
Also, do y'all think i'd be able to get one for around $500?

Tex, I can't answer most of your questions because the only electros I have shot are PE markers. However, I do own an Ego8 and a Geo that has been upgraded to be a Geo+. My observations are this : The Geo with stock Shaft 3 kit is quieter than my 08 with a DW barrel, however, it is nowhere near as efficient. Dont ask for specifics. I can only tell you that I had to leave the field in the middle of a Final Battle when shooting the Geo. I have never had to do that with my 08.
As far as discerning kick, I am a longtime real steel shooter, so no marker kicks for me. When you spend a day shooting a 45/70, it s kinda hard to understand how you notice a marker "kick".
Somebody way more knowledgeable than I will chime in here soon. Dont worry.
I didnt find any kick with my Geo2 and i get about 6 pods and a hopper out of mine

I understand about the real steel shooter, bd. I do that myself. More of a handgunner, tho. Still, with my matrices, i could set my trigger to just switch return and not have to worry about bounce at all. With the ego, this is not the case. In semi, i can occasionally get it to bounce due to the recoil of the marker.
And how many shots should i be getting off a 68/45? I can usually shoot about 3 bags, it seems, with my ego. If i can shoot two with a geo, i think i'd be happy.

You should see 900-1000 shots from a 68 vs the 1200 you get from a good ego.
The first gen geo with the stock bolt was loud like the ego, the gst bolt makes it much better. Add a dw or freak barrel and will be happy with how soft it is.
The feel of the geo is strange if you are a long time ego owner. First it is small and has a flat straight shot vs the lob of the ego. Most that don't like it say they don't like it because they don't "feel" the shot like you do on a ego.

I am nowhere near breaking in my Geo2 but I can shoot 6 pods and a hopper with mine. it should get more efficient after its fully broken in.. we'll see. but i have no regrets..

I may be hated for saying this but, I actually thought a DM9 shoots nicer than a GEO. I love eclipse markers and own two, both poppets. I don't own the Geo (was not a GEO 2) or DM9. But, have used both for a day of playing (I have a friend that hoards markers and lets us borrow his stuff). I thought the DM9 was much smoother and quieter. The only thing I like about a stock GEO over a stock DM9 is the display. I can't believe Dye charges as much as they do for their guns and they don't include a display instead of blinking LED lights.

I don't think anyone would contest too heavily that the DMs deliver a smoother shot... however, the difference between just taking a DM out for a spin, and owning/keeping one maintained for a season (and having to hunt down that one errant oring out of 16 or so when your DM springs a leak down the barrel) will color ones perception.
The Geo series (in my opinion) is leagues easier to maintain and/or troubleshoot than any incarnation of DM, and that's where it's greatest strength lies. Spoolie valve, with the maintenance and reliability of a poppet.

That is true. However, I own a Proto and love the whole color coded oring thing they do.

I used a pm6 for most of 2006 and 7. I never had any problem with it whatsoever. I just lubed the bolt every time i played, and it shot like butter. Had an orange bolt, hybrid bolt guide, lucky ul board, with dm6 wired eyes. I prolly had 70-80 cases or more thru that gun, and never had to replace an o-ring or anything. I only got rid of it because sponsorships had me needing to shoot eclipse.
I had a similar pm5 before that 6, it never gave me any **** either. Idk why people say the maintenance on them is so difficult. Maybe i got lucky with a pair of beastly markers, but i really never had any trouble out of my matrixes.
Of course, all i do with my ego7 is put a drop or two of oil in the ram slot once a month, and go to town on fools... amidoingitrite?

I'm from the Meridian area. We pretty much only play outlaw. We occasionally go to Tuscaloosa and play at the field there.

You get your geo yet? I cant speak too much for the geo, I have a geo2. Its not as smooth as a dm, or as quiet. But its exponentially quieter than most egos around here. I really only notice the recoil when I am ripping on it for an extended period of time (more than a 2-3 second burst, could be Im not used to the feeling of extended firing, I rarely need to lay ropes that big). I dont think you will be dissapointed, but if it does have the + upgrades you may want to jump on that very soon.
